Southern Transfer Station

550 Farnsworth Rd, Petersburg, WV 26847

(304) 257-2644

Southern Transfer Station in Landes Station is the local transfer station for the area around Petersburg, used by residents hauling household trash, seasonal cleanups, and small loads from nearby hollows. Located on Farnsworth Rd just past town, it’s the place people choose when driving all the way to a distant landfill isn’t practical.

Drive up to an entrance booth and talk to the attendant or wait to be waved through; there’s normally a scale where vehicles stop either coming in or leaving since loads are often weighed. The site is a working lot with compactors and large containers, so expect noise from trucks and machinery and unpaved or gravel surfaces in some spots. Recycling or drop-off containers are usually grouped to one side and the main tipping area sits lower down so trucks can back up to it.

Before You Go

  • Cover loose loads with a tarp and tie everything down-wind can blow things out on the stretchy mountain roads.
  • Bring gloves and wear sturdy shoes; walkways can be gravelly and there’s often bits of broken glass or metal around the dump area.
  • If possible, avoid peak weekend cleanup times; lines and waiting to get on the scale can add a lot of time to the trip, especially in spring.
