Short Creek Sanitary Landfill is the local landfill out on North Fork Road in Wheeling, used by homeowners, haulers, and contractors when trash needs to be buried rather than recycled. It looks like a working site rather than a drop-off center and handles larger, heavier loads that transfer stations won't take.
There’s an entrance booth and a scale, so expect to stop for directions and to be weighed; tipping fees at landfills are commonly charged by weight. Vehicles pull up, get directed where to dump, then usually cross the scale again on the way out. The site is big enough for heavy equipment and long dump trucks-gravel roads, mounded cells and machinery are typical sights, and it can be dusty in summer or muddy after rains.
