Short Creek Landfill

258 N Fork Rd, Wheeling, WV 26003

(304) 277-2088

Short Creek Landfill is the local burial site for household and commercial trash on the north side of Wheeling. Small haulers, contractors and residents from surrounding hollows all come here when regular pickup won’t do. Roads in and out can be slow in bad weather because of the mountain terrain.

Drive up N Fork Rd and look for the entrance off the main road; there’s a scale you’ll cross entering and another on the way out since tipping fees are charged by weight. The site is a working landfill - large mounds, compactors, and trucks moving loads are common sights, not a tidy transfer station. Pull into the booth area when directed, then follow staff or signs to the unloading area; expect to be rerouted depending on where active cells are being worked. Weekends and seasonal cleanups tend to build up a line, and the access road can get rough in wet or icy conditions.

Before You Go

  • Keep loads tarped or covered for the drive - wind can scatter debris on the route and make unloading messier.
  • Plan for possible wait time: bring water, secure loose items in the truck bed, and be ready to wait through a few trucks during busy weekends.
  • Have a clear idea of what’s staying in the truck and what needs to be separated before getting to the scale to speed things up.
