North Transfer Station on Buford Hwy is the kind of place residents use when hauling a truckload or after a big home project. It’s a transfer station - material gets compacted here and then hauled off to a landfill elsewhere. Locals drop by with bulky stuff because it’s usually closer than driving all the way out to a landfill.

Drive to 4600 Buford Hwy NE and look for a collection of concrete bays and large roll-off areas; there’s an entrance booth you’ll pull up to before getting directed where to go. Expect to cross a scale so vehicles are typically weighed in and weighed out, and large compactor trucks come and go. The site feels industrial - big concrete walls, piles of material, and heavy equipment moving around - so drive slowly and pay attention to signs and traffic flow. Weekends, especially during seasonal cleanups, can back up into the access road, so lines are common then.

Before You Go

  • Have the load secured and sorted as much as possible before getting there; loose material can spill and slows things down.
  • Keep an ID or proof of residency handy in case it’s requested at the entrance booth.
  • If towing a trailer or driving a pickup, know which lane to pull into and be ready to stop on the scale when directed.
