Rockingham County Landfill on Shuff Road in Madison is the county site where solid trash is buried; it’s used by local residents and commercial haulers. Don’t expect a neat drop-off like a transfer station - this is a working landfill with big trucks and open tipping areas.
Pull up to a scale/entrance booth area - most landfills charge by weight, so expect to be weighed in and out. The site is large and mostly gravel or dirt, with heavy equipment and piles of material, so watch for big trucks and follow any directions at the gate. Unloading is outdoors and can get dusty; recycling or reuse spots, if available, are usually separate from the active tipping area.
