Merrifield Transfer Station

2801 Dorr Ave., Fairfax, VA 22031

800-963-4776

Merrifield Transfer Station is the Fairfax site where local trash is dropped off, compacted and loaded onto larger trucks bound for a landfill. Neighbors, small haulers and people doing big cleanouts use it when a regular curbside pickup isn’t enough.

Drive up to an entrance booth and be prepared to stop and be directed where to pull up; there’s usually a scale and an exit stop as well. The lot is industrial - concrete bays, big compactors and constant truck traffic; it can be loud and a bit smelly. Residential drop-offs are common, and during busy times there’s a line of cars and pickups waiting to get in. After the load is dumped into a pit it gets compacted and loaded onto larger trucks that leave the site for a landfill outside the area.

Before You Go

  • Secure loose items with a tarp and straps so debris doesn’t blow out while waiting; open loads can be a hassle and will slow unloading.
  • Have proof of residency or any required documents easily accessible in the glovebox so stopping at the booth is quick.
  • If possible, sort recyclables and bulky items beforehand to make unloading faster and keep lanes moving during busy weekend or spring-cleanup times.
