IESI Hardin County Landfill is the county landfill out on FM 770 near Kountze, used by local residents and commercial haulers for final disposal. Big trucks and pickup loads show up here-this is where things get buried rather than recycled or processed. The Texas Commission on Environmental Quality oversees facilities like this, and in rural Texas it’s normal to drive a bit farther for a landfill.
Pull in and you’ll notice a wide gravel drive and the sort of heavy equipment and dirt piles that come with a working landfill. Like most landfills, there’s typically a weigh scale and tipping fees are commonly charged by weight with a minimum charge in many places, so expect to stop for weighing. Traffic ranges from small pickup trucks to commercial dumpers; give big trucks room to maneuver and follow any traffic flow in the lot. The site can be dusty and muddy depending on weather, and the active dumping face will look very industrial rather than tidy.
