York County Landfill

289 Public Works Rd, York, SC 29745

(803) 628-3186

York County Landfill on Public Works Road is the county’s main burial site for municipal trash and is used by both households and commercial haulers. A big, open place on the outskirts of York where loads end up being buried rather than sorted or recycled. Expect it to be busy on weekends and during yard-cleanup season.

Drive in and you’ll pass a scale house where trucks get weighed - tipping fees are charged by weight, so there’s a weigh-in and then a weigh-out. There’s a booth to stop at and directions from there for where to dump depending on the load type; larger commercial trucks are accepted. The site is expansive with rolling dirt cells and heavy equipment moving material; trucks usually pull up to a working face to tip and then head back to the scale. Recycling or drop-off bins, if present, tend to be off to the side of the main tipping area.

Before You Go

  • Bring a tarp for loose debris so nothing blows out while driving on Public Works Road.
  • Have paperwork handy for commercial loads - hauling companies often get routed differently than residential vehicles.
  • Plan for possible wait times on weekends or after storms; larger trucks can take longer at the scale and tipping area.
