Transfer Station

Waste Management - Erie Transfer Station

1154 W 16th St, Erie, PA 16509

(814) 824-7800

A local transfer station where household and small commercial loads are dropped off and then compacted and hauled to a landfill elsewhere. Neighbors, landscapers and small contractors use this place when driving out to a distant landfill doesn’t make sense. It’s the kind of spot that handles a steady trickle of pickups and trailers rather than long stays.

Drive slowly into a gated lot; there’s usually an entrance booth and a scale to check your load weight, so be prepared to stop twice - once in and once out. The tipping area is a concrete pad or pit with large compactors and roll-off trucks coming and going; expect some diesel noise and dusty surfaces. Recycling or drop-off bins are often grouped to one side, while general trash vehicles move toward the compactor. Weekends and spring cleanup times are busier, so lines and short waits are common.

Before You Go

  • Secure loose items and tarp loads to prevent debris from blowing out while driving to and inside the yard.
  • Try to visit midweek or mid-morning if possible; weekends typically have longer lines and more waiting.
  • Have a plan for how the vehicle will back up to the tipping area - smaller trucks and trailers move faster, so clear communication with any helpers speeds things along.
