Northwest Sanitary Landfill

1436 West Sunbury Rd., West Sunbury, PA 16061

800-963-4776

Northwest Sanitary Landfill is the big burial site just outside West Sunbury where both household and commercial garbage ends up. Locals and haulers use it for final disposal, and it handles the kind of large-scale tipping that smaller transfer stations don't.

A small entrance booth and a scale are onsite, so expect to stop, get weighed, and then be routed toward the active tipping area. The site is mostly open earth and compacted cells with heavy equipment moving around, and there’s room for tractor-trailers as well as pickup trucks. Vehicles usually pull forward off the access road to the scale, then proceed to a dumping spot; lines can form on weekends and during spring cleanup. Staff direct traffic from the booth to where loads are taken, so follow their signals and watch for slow-moving machinery.

Before You Go

  • Load items so they’re easy to toss or unload - loose material and unsecured trash can slow down the process and create a mess.
  • Have ID and any required load paperwork handy at the booth to avoid fumbling while others wait behind.
  • Expect wind and dust on site; tie down tarps and close vehicle windows before entering the active area.
