Cherokee Nation Sanitary Landfill

Cherokee Nation Sanitary Landfill, Cherokee Nation Landfill Road, Stilwell, 74960, Oklahoma

Cherokee Nation Sanitary Landfill is the big burial site out on Cherokee Nation Landfill Road just outside Stilwell. Locals, contractors and haulers use it when trash or construction debris needs to be taken to a final dumping spot.

Expect a scale and a small entrance booth where vehicles stop to be weighed - many landfills charge by weight, so be prepared for a weigh-in and weigh-out. After the scale, traffic is directed toward a tipping area; larger trucks usually back up to the active cell while smaller pickups are guided to a simpler drop-off. The site is expansive and mostly dirt and compacted piles, with heavy equipment working the face, so watch for trucks and uneven ground. Lines can form at busy times, especially when people are doing big cleanouts or there’s wet weather slowing operations.

Before You Go

  • Cover and secure loose items on the load - wind and tipping can scatter debris and create extra cleanup time.
  • Have a rough idea of how heavy the load is and keep any business paperwork handy; tipping fees are commonly weight-based and commercial hauls often require documentation.
  • Bring a vehicle that handles gravel and rutted ground, wear sturdy shoes, and be ready for mud after rain since the site gets sloppy quickly.
