Grand Forks Active Landfill

Grand Forks Active Landfill, 5500 54th Avenue North, Grand Forks, 58203, North Dakota

Grand Forks Active Landfill is the main burial site for trash in the Grand Forks area, out on 54th Avenue North. Residents with pickups and commercial haulers both use this large, working landfill. The North Dakota Department of Environmental Quality oversees solid waste in the state, and winter weather can change access and slow operations.

Drive up the entrance lane and there’s a scale and a small booth where vehicles typically stop to be weighed; a second stop is common after unloading. The working face is a wide dirt and gravel area with heavy equipment moving around, so watch for dozers and compactors. Weekends and spring cleanup draw lines, and commercial trucks use the same lanes and are charged tipping fees, usually figured by weight. Surface conditions can be rough-mud in thaw or packed snow and ice in winter-so take it slow.

Before You Go

  • Secure and tarp loose loads; wind or bumps can scatter debris and slow the process.
  • If towing a trailer, pull fully onto the scale so the whole rig is weighed, then move forward to the drop area so the next vehicle can use the scale.
  • Bring sturdy footwear and expect mud or packed snow depending on the season; allow extra time on busy weekend mornings.
