Rosebud County Landfill

Rosebud County Landfill, 4 miles N of Colstrip on Hwy 39, Colstrip, 59323, Montana

Rosebud County Landfill is the county dump about four miles north of Colstrip on Highway 39, used by local residents and commercial haulers from around the area. Big, no-frills place-built for trucks and trailers rather than small cars.

Pull up to a small entrance station and a scale; most county landfills charge tipping fees by weight and small loads often hit a minimum charge. After that, drivers usually follow the drive to the active dumping area where open cells and dirt ramps are visible and larger trucks maneuver around. Lines build up on weekends and during spring cleanup, so there can be wait times before getting to the pit. Keep an eye out for dust and wind - the site is exposed and can be messy on a blustery day.

Before You Go

  • Cover and secure loads before leaving the highway; wind will scatter loose debris across the road and yard.
  • Pack trailers so unloading is quick-separate bulky brush or bulky items near the tailgate rather than mixed in with trash.
  • Give big trucks plenty of room when pulling onto the scale or into the tipping area; tight turns and mud can make maneuvering slower than expected.
