City of Shelby Landfill at 50 City Shop Road is where most of Shelby’s trash ends up - used by households and local businesses for loads that get buried. It’s a municipal landfill with active dumping areas; tipping fees are assessed by weight and commercial loads are accepted.
Drive in on a gravel approach toward a small entrance area and a scale; vehicles usually stop to be weighed so expect a brief hold for the weigh-in. After that, drivers are routed to a dumping spot where loads are tipped and pushed into the active cell, with heavy equipment working the site. The place looks like layered dirt mounds rather than neat piles, and conditions get dusty in dry weather and muddy when wet. Don’t assume recycling drop-offs are available here - this is primarily a burial site.
