Transfer Station

Miller Road Transfer Station

2606 Miller Rd, Kalamazoo, MI 49001

(269) 388-3346

A working transfer station where local trash is compacted and put on trucks to be hauled out of town. Used mostly by residents dropping off household loads and small contractors who prefer not to drive to a distant landfill. It sits on Miller Road just inside Kalamazoo city limits and looks like a typical industrial lot rather than a tidy recycling center.

Drive up to an entrance booth and be prepared to stop briefly for instructions; there's usually a lane to pull into before heading to the unloading area. Large concrete tipping bays and piles of compacted material are visible from the access road, with commercial trucks coming and going. The site is more practical than pretty - expect gravel or pavement, heavy equipment, and the smell and noise that come with compacting operations. Weekends, especially during spring cleanup, tend to have longer lines and slower traffic through the site.

Before You Go

  • Aim for weekday mornings if possible; lines are shorter and unloading moves faster than on busy weekend afternoons.
  • Secure and cover loose items in pickup beds or trailers before arriving - loose debris can blow off during short waits and makes unloading slower.
  • Bring gloves, sturdy shoes, and a hand truck or straps for heavy bags and bulky items to speed the process once at the unloading area.
