Elk Run Sanitary Landfill is the local landfill out on 5 Mile Highway where Onaway-area trash gets buried. Neighbors, haulers and contractors bring loads here when curbside or transfer stations aren’t an option.
This is a full-scale sanitary landfill with large cells and dirt roads rather than a small drop-off center. There’s an entrance booth and a scale area; like most landfills, tipping fees are handled by weight so vehicles are weighed as part of the process. Commercial trucks use the site as well, so expect to see big rigs and mixed traffic alongside cars and pickups. After stopping at the booth you’ll be directed out to the active tipping area to unload and then drive back toward the scale.
