Monterey Transfer Station

40 Gould Rd, Monterey, MA 01245

(413) 528-3523

Monterey Transfer Station is the small town transfer station on Gould Road people use for household trash and recyclables. It’s where local loads get compacted and sent off to a larger landfill elsewhere. Neighbors drop by with pickup loads, bags, and recyclables rather than driving to a distant dump.

Pull into the driveway and there’s a small entrance booth and a scale nearby; many transfer stations charge by weight so expect to stop again on the way out. The place is compact-paved areas, a few tipping bays and rows of recycling containers a short walk from the entrance. Traffic backs up on weekends and during spring cleanup, so there’s often a line of cars waiting to get to the booth. Signs and simple lanes guide vehicles to the different drop points; bring something to help unload heavier items.

Before You Go

  • Sort and flatten boxes at home so unloading moves quickly-Massachusetts requires stricter recycling separation, so separate paper, cardboard and mixed recyclables ahead of time.
  • Avoid the busiest times (weekend mornings and spring cleanup days) if possible; arriving midweek or late morning usually means a shorter line.
  • Bring gloves, a tarp or straps for loose loads, and someone to help lift heavy items so unloading at the bay goes faster and safer.
