Chatham Transfer Station

97 Sam Ryder Rd, Chatham, MA 02633

(508) 945-5156

Chatham Transfer Station is the town transfer station on Sam Ryder Road that locals use to drop off household trash and recyclables before it gets compacted and trucked out. Neighbors, contractors with small loads, and anyone doing a big cleanout tend to swing by here. Expect a functional, no-frills spot rather than a public park.

Drive up to a small entrance booth and stop briefly; there’s usually a scale somewhere near the entry so vehicles may be checked on the way in and again on the way out. The tipping area is an open, paved yard with concrete walls and large containers; trucks do the heavy lifting after loads are dumped. Recycling and bulk items are separated from the general trash, so have materials sorted before arriving. Weekends and seasonal cleanup times can back up traffic, so lines are common at peak hours.

Before You Go

  • Sort recyclables and banned items at home if possible-Massachusetts has strict recycling rules and many transfer stations require separation.
  • Bring helpers for heavy or awkward items; the yard is not cushioned and dumping takes some maneuvering up to the bays.
  • If the line looks long, it’s often quicker to come midweek or early in the morning when local traffic is lighter.
