Recycling Center

Montgomery County Shady Grove Transfer Station and Recycling Center

16101 Frederick Rd, Derwood, MD 20855

(240) 777-0311

A county recycling center that serves Derwood and nearby neighborhoods, mostly used by residents bringing household recyclables and bulky items. Quick local stop for dropping off bottles, cardboard, paper and common recyclables, with a larger footprint than a curbside bin area.

There’s an entrance drive with a small booth for check-in and directions, and several large collection containers and compactors set out beyond it. Pull up slowly - traffic can back up on weekends and spring cleanup days, and vehicles line up into the lot. Recycling bins are grouped by material, with clear signage on the containers themselves; bulky items usually have a separate drop zone. The site feels industrial: paved lanes, concrete islands and large metal bins, so bring gloves and secure any loose loads.

Before You Go

  • Load materials so they can be moved quickly: flatten boxes, bundle paper, and have glass or bottles accessible for fast drop-off.
  • Avoid peak times if possible - early weekdays are usually less crowded than weekend mornings.
  • Bring straps or a tarp for loose items; windy days can scatter lightweight stuff and make unloading slower.
