The Castine Transfer Station on Riverside Dr is where locals drop off household trash to be compacted and trucked out to a landfill. People who live in town or have a summer place use it when driving to a distant landfill isn’t worth the trip.
Like many transfer stations, there’s typically a small entrance area and a scale or booth where vehicles pause to sort things and handle payment. The site looks like a working yard - big metal containers, compactors and room for trucks to back up. Pull in slowly and be prepared to wait in line on busy weekend or spring-cleanup days. Have loads roughly sorted into trash and recyclables before getting to the drop-off area so you don’t have to shuffle things around.
