Decatur County Landfill

Decatur County Landfill, 1600 Highway 36, Oberlin, 67749, Kansas

Decatur County Landfill is the county dump out on Highway 36 in Oberlin, the place locals use when the curbside pickup or a burn pile won't do. Residents and businesses drop off household junk, construction debris and other trash here; it's the spot where material gets buried rather than recycled.

Expect to cross a scale - most county landfills charge by weight and have a tipping-fee structure with minimums for small loads. There's typically a small entrance booth to check in, then a drive out to the active cell to tip before coming back over the scale. The site is mostly dirt and gravel with large mounded cells and heavy trucks moving around, so give big rigs plenty of space. Weekends and spring clean-up times get longer lines, and loose material can blow around if not secured.

Before You Go

  • Secure tarps and tie down loose items so trash doesn't blow out during the trip or while waiting in line.
  • Have the load arranged so it can be tipped quickly-heavy items together, lighter stuff on top-to speed the drop-off and avoid extra handling.
  • Bring gloves and be prepared to step on uneven dirt and gravel; leave room for trucks to swing when backing into the tipping area.
