Atchison County Transfer Station #2

9803 US-159, Effingham, KS 66023

A small county transfer station just off US-159 in Effingham for local residents and small haulers. It’s the place where household and local collection trucks drop off loads that get compacted and shipped out to a regional landfill. People use it when driving all the way to the county landfill would be a half-day trip.

The site looks like an industrial yard more than a recycling center-metal buildings, compactors, and truck traffic are common sights. Drive into the paved entrance and follow the flow of other vehicles to the unloading area; staff or signs may guide traffic during busier times. Loads are consolidated and put onto larger trucks to go to a regional landfill, so expect a working, utilitarian atmosphere rather than landscaped grounds. Weekends and spring cleanup times tend to be the busiest, while weekdays are usually quieter.

Before You Go

  • Secure and cover loose material before leaving the truck so nothing blows out on the highway.
  • Bring gloves and basic tools to help unload bulky or awkward items; the site is functional, not customer-friendly like a retail place.
  • Try to visit midweek or outside early spring cleanup windows to avoid long lines and waiting behind larger commercial trucks.
