Ottumwa / Wapello Landfill

13277 165th Ave, Ottumwa, IA 52501

(641) 683-0644

Small county landfill just south of Ottumwa that handles final disposal for household and commercial garbage. Farmers and local businesses use it as well as residents doing cleanups, and the site feels like a working, no-frills place rather than a drop-off center for recycling only.

Drive up to an entrance booth and you’ll see a scale where vehicles are weighed in and again on the way out-tipping fees are assessed by weight, with different rates commonly applied for residential versus commercial loads. Pull up to the scale house first, then follow the road to the active dumping area and then back to the outbound scale. The property is large and open with visible dirt roads and rolling capped cells; expect basic signage and places to stage a load before backing in to dump.

Before You Go

  • Have proof of residency or business credentials handy, since many county landfills ask for ID or account information at the gate.
  • Secure loads with tarps and straps; loose debris can be a hassle and trailers need to be easy to unload once you're at the tipping face.
  • Plan to avoid weekend and spring cleanup rushes-lines form and backing into the pit takes longer when the site is busy.
