Liberty Landfill

8635 East State Rd. 16, Monticello, IN 47960

800-963-4776

Liberty Landfill is the county landfill out on S Meridian Rd that both residents and local businesses use when other options are full or not accepted. It’s a large, working landfill in a rural stretch of Clarklake, mainly for final burial of municipal and commercial trash. Expect this place to be busy when people are doing spring cleanouts or big property projects.

Drive up to an entrance booth and a weigh scale - they charge by weight so vehicles are weighed coming in and again going out. The site itself is broad, with gravel roads, big piles and heavy equipment moving around; watch for trucks and keep to the flow. Loads are typically handled at a tipping area before heading back to the scale, and commercial trucks are commonly seen there. Lines and slowdowns happen on weekends and during seasonal cleanups, so plan extra time.

Before You Go

  • Secure everything in the truck or trailer; loose material can blow off and staff will ask to stop and clean it up before driving through.
  • Sort out bottles and cans ahead of time - Michigan’s bottle/can deposit system affects how those get handled, so it’s easier to separate them before arriving.
  • Expect to stop at the scale twice (in and out) and allow extra time during spring or weekend peak hours; bring sturdy footwear for walking around the site.
