A Transfer Station in downtown Indianapolis where local trash is dropped off, compacted, then loaded onto trucks bound for landfills elsewhere. Neighbors bring everything from a bag of household trash to a pickup load of junk; it's practical for anyone who doesn't want to drive out to a distant landfill.

Drive up to a staffed entrance booth and be prepared to stop - most people pull up, wait briefly, then move to a scale or lane. The yard feels industrial: big concrete bays, compactors or transfer trailers, and large roll-off containers. Trucks come and go regularly, so there’s a steady rumble of equipment and the occasional dust or odor. Lines can form, especially on weekends or during spring cleanup, so plan for a short wait at peak times.

Before You Go

  • Secure and cover loads with a tarp or straps so debris doesn't blow out while driving or sitting in line.
  • Load and organize items so they can be unloaded quickly - separate loose material from bulky pieces before getting to the drop-off area.
  • Try to visit outside of typical weekend cleanup times if possible; midday weekdays usually move faster.
