Sangamon Valley Landfill on Sand Hill Road is the larger landfill just outside Springfield where both homeowners and commercial haulers bring trash for final disposal. Trucks and trailers are common, and the site is clearly industrial rather than a drop-off recycling center. Landfills of this scale typically handle both residential and commercial loads.
Pull up to an entrance area with a scale and a little booth; vehicles are usually weighed and tipping fees are charged by weight, so expect to stop twice. The property is roomy with big dirt mounds, bulldozers and heavy equipment working the cells, and gravel roads that kick up dust on dry days. Drivers move to the active dumping spot, unload, then return to the scale for an outbound weight. Lines build up on weekends and during spring cleanup, so expect occasional wait times.
