11601 S. Austin Ave., Alsip, IL 60803

Chicago Metro Transfer Station in Alsip is a busy local transfer station where neighborhood and municipal loads get compacted and sent off-site to landfills. People dropping off household or small-scale loads use it because it's closer than driving out to a distant landfill.

Drive up to a small entrance booth and be prepared to wait if a truck is backing in; the place moves big loads, so there’s regular tractor-trailer activity. There’s usually a scale to cross - many transfer stations charge by weight, so expect to stop on the way out. The tipping area is a large concrete bay with compactors and long lines of roll-off containers; it looks industrial, not landscaped. Weekends and spring cleanup bring noticeably longer lines and more traffic in the yard.

Before You Go

  • Bring your load secured and easy to lift or dump; volunteers and helpers aren’t guaranteed and the bays are designed for quick unloading.
  • Have paperwork or ID handy in the glovebox - the attendant at the booth will ask for something to verify the vehicle or account.
  • Avoid late morning on weekend days if possible; early or late in the day tends to be less crowded and easier to find a spot to pull into the tipping bay.
