Waiohinu Transfer Station on Kaulia Road is the small, no-frills transfer yard people from Naalehu use instead of driving all the way to a distant landfill. It’s a transfer station - trash here gets compacted and loaded onto trucks to be hauled off elsewhere, mostly used by local residents with household or bulky loads.
Pull up to an entrance booth and be prepared for a short stop to check in; there’s commonly a scale on the drive so plan to stop more than once while moving through. The site is compact - think a paved or gravel yard with roll-off containers and a tipping area rather than a wide-open landfill. If recycling bins are available they’ll usually sit off to one side; larger items get driven up to the transfer floor to be dumped into the compactor. Lines build up on weekends or during neighborhood cleanups, so plan for a wait at busy times.
