Kealakehe Transfer Station and Recycling Center is the local drop-off spot on Queen Ka'ahumanu Hwy for recycling and material-haul needs in Kailua-Kona. Folks clearing out garages, doing remodels or just sorting household recyclables use it because it gets the job done without fuss.
Pull off the highway into a fairly industrial lot with a booth and pull-up lanes; on busy days there can be a short line to get in. Many recycling centers have a scale, so be ready to stop on the way in and again when leaving. Expect separate zones or containers for paper, cardboard, glass, metals and common plastics, and some centers also run special collection events for things like electronics. The site looks like concrete pads, roll-off containers and trucks moving materials - a working, no-frills setup.
