Athens-Clarke County Landfill on Lexington Road is the county site locals use when a pickup or a trailer has more than will fit in the curbside bin. Contractors and people doing big cleanouts show up here - it’s a working landfill in Winterville, not a tidy transfer station.
Drive in and follow the entrance lane to an intake/scale area; most landfills have tipping fees based on weight or a minimum charge, so expect to cross a scale on the way out as well. Pull up to the active dumping area and follow the traffic flow - the place is mostly compacted dirt, piles of fill and open cells. There are pickups, dump trucks and occasional heavy equipment moving around, so take it slow and watch for dusty or muddy spots after rain. Weekends and spring-cleanup periods are the busiest times.
