Transfer Station

Waterford Transfer Station

1000 Hartford Turnpike, Waterford, CT 06385, United States

Waterford Transfer Station is the town transfer point where household trash gets dropped off, compacted, and loaded onto trucks headed out of state. Locals use it for regular garbage drop-offs and for bigger cleanouts when hauling to a distant landfill would be a pain.

Drive up to a small entrance booth where staff check vehicles and direct traffic; there’s usually a lane to pull into and a scale you’ll cross on the way in or out since material is weighed. The site is industrial - concrete bays, a big compactor, and piles of sorted materials in different areas beyond the main drop-off. Recycling bins are typically off to one side past the booth, and larger items have a separate drop area that may require a short drive inside the yard. Weekends can get busy, especially during spring cleanup, so expect some queuing and slow-moving traffic through the site.

Before You Go

  • If the town issues transfer station permits, bring yours and have a piece of ID or vehicle registration handy; many towns ask to verify residency.
  • Load vehicles so items can be tossed or handed out quickly - cover loose trash with a tarp and secure furniture or mattresses for safe unloading.
  • Sort recyclables and bulky items before getting to the gate so directions at the booth are easier to follow and the stop inside takes less time.
