Colchester Transfer Station on Old Amston Road handles the town’s trash and recyclables for residents and local haulers. Because Connecticut sends waste out of state, this is the spot where loads get compacted and loaded onto trucks for the trip elsewhere.
Pull up to a small entrance booth and be prepared to stop; most transfer stations use a scale so vehicles are weighed on the way in and sometimes again on the way out. Traffic generally flows in a loop-follow the arrows and other vehicles to the tipping or drop-off bays where material is unloaded and compacted. The recycling area is kept separate from the trash bays, usually with large containers or bins, so having things sorted beforehand speeds things up. Weekends fill up fast, especially during spring cleanups, and trailers or big pickups may need extra room to maneuver.
