West Garfield County Landfill sits just off County Road 246 west of Rifle and handles the county’s truck-and-trailer drop-offs as well as smaller household hauls. Neighbors bring anything that won’t fit curbside - yard cleanups, construction leftovers, that old sofa. It’s the practical option when extra trash needs to go somewhere out of town.
There’s a scale at the gate and tipping fees are typically charged by weight, so expect to be weighed coming and going. Pull up to the entrance booth and then follow the gravel drive out to the active disposal areas; the site is mostly open dirt and compacted cells, so it can be dusty and a bit rough underfoot. Weekends, especially spring cleanup season, get backed up and traffic stacks up at the gate. Recycling or metal drop-off spots are often off to the side past the main dumping area, so keep an eye out while driving through.
