Zanker Road (Nine Par) Sanitary Landfill

Zanker Road (Nine Par) Sanitary Landfill, 705 Los Esteros Road, San Jose, 95134, California

Zanker Road (Nine Par) Sanitary Landfill on Los Esteros Road is the big burial site for trash coming out of San Jose and the South Bay. Haulers, contractors and residents with larger loads end up here rather than at a transfer station. It’s a working landfill - large scale and busy on peak days.

Pull up to a staffed entrance booth and then cross a scale; tipping fees are charged by weight, so expect to stop again on the way out. The property is expansive with heavy equipment, dirt/gravel ramps and visible landfill faces where trucks are spreading material. Commercial trucks are common and the flow can be slow during weekend or seasonal clean-up times. Because California pushes for diversion, many facilities around here require separating organics from trash, so have anything compostable set aside if that applies.

Before You Go

  • Secure and cover loose loads - windy days and dusty piles make a mess and uncovered material can mean extra handling at the site.
  • Try for a weekday morning if possible; lines at the scale and entrance stack up on weekends and during neighborhood clean-up season.
  • If coming with a commercial load, have basic business paperwork and load descriptions ready since commercial deliveries are handled differently than small residential drop-offs.
