Taft Sanitary Landfill sits out on Elk Hills Road and is where local trash ends up-used by residents, haulers and commercial trucks from Taft and nearby areas. It’s a working, no‑frills landfill with large earthen mounds and heavy equipment, the final destination for material that can’t be recycled locally.
Drive in past an entrance booth and expect to stop at a scale; tipping fees are typically charged by weight, so vehicles often weigh in and out. After the scale, follow the flow of traffic and visible signs to the active tipping area-big trucks and pickups usually separate themselves and the ground is often dusty and uneven. Lots of heavy machinery will be moving around and there are tall piles of compacted material, so keep a safe distance. Weekends get backed up, especially during spring cleanup season.
