San Onofre Landfill sits about 2.7 miles east of Basilone Gate at Camp Pendleton and is where local residents and haulers take larger loads that don’t fit the curbside bins. It’s used by neighborhood cleanup drivers and commercial trucks alike.
There’s an entrance booth with a scale up front - tipping fees are typically charged by weight, so expect to cross the scale and stop again on the way out. After the booth, follow the traffic flow to the working cells or the flat tipping pads; pickups and trailers usually use different spots than big roll-offs. The place is large, dusty, and full of dirt berms and heavy equipment rather than neat rows of bins. Because California requires a lot of diversion, there are often separate spots for organics and recyclables, so partly sorted loads move faster.
