Transfer Station

McCourtney Road Transfer Station

14741 Wolf Mountain Road, Grass Valley, CA 95949

800-963-4776

A working transfer station out past the hills of Grass Valley where people drop off household trash and the haulers compact it for the longer trip to a landfill. Drivers from the neighborhood and surrounding towns swing by when a load is too big for curbside pickup.

The site is a straightforward yard with an intake booth and a drive-up scale-many transfer stations in California charge by weight, so be prepared to stop again on the way out. Pull up to the booth, they’ll direct where to unload, and there are large concrete bays and compactors visible from the drive lanes. Recycling and organic separation is commonly required in California, so expect separate bins or piles for those items just past the entrance. Weekends fill up faster than weekdays, and spring cleanup days get noticeably long lines.

Before You Go

  • Sort recyclables and organics ahead of time-having them separated saves time and avoids extra shuffling at the pile.
  • Bring a tarp and straps for loose loads; wind can blow papers and dust around the yard and secure loads cut down on unloading mess.
  • Come early on a weekday or mid-morning to avoid the weekend backlog; a single pickup truck or small trailer can still take a while during peak times.
