Transfer Station

Caspar Transfer Station

14000 Prairie Way, Mendocino, CA 95460

(707) 964-3781

Caspar Transfer Station is the local Mendocino drop-off where household and small commercial loads get compacted and sent offsite. Neighbors come here when hauling garden clippings, old furniture, or a carload of trash and recyclables. It’s the practical alternative to driving all the way to a distant landfill.

Expect a plainly marked entrance with an attendant booth and a scale; loads are weighed and then driven up to the transfer area where material is compacted into larger trucks. The site looks utilitarian - concrete pads, roll-off containers, and big trucks moving in and out - so be ready for noise and diesel smells. Lines are common on weekends and during spring cleanup, so there can be a short wait to get to the scale and then to the tipping area. Staff usually direct vehicle traffic for backing up and unloading, and signs will indicate where to separate recyclables and organics as required by California rules.

Before You Go

  • Sort recyclables and organics at home before coming - California rules mean those need to be kept separate and it saves time at the site.
  • Tie down loose material and cover loads for the drive; bring gloves and a rake or shovel to handle messy stuff quickly.
  • Try to come midweek or early morning to avoid weekend lines, and drive slowly through the site because trucks are maneuvering in tight spots.
