Transfer Station

City of Phoenix North Gateway Transfer Station

30205 N Black Canyon Hwy, Phoenix, AZ 85085

(602) 262-7109

A working transfer station on the north side of Phoenix, used by residents hauling trash and contractors dropping off loads that get compacted and hauled to a landfill. Located off Black Canyon Highway, it’s the sort of place locals use when the big regional landfills are too far. Expect trucks, trailers, and a steady stream of neighborhood pickups and landscapers.

There’s an entrance booth and a brief stop at a scale - many transfer stations charge by weight, so be prepared for a pause on the way in and again on the way out. Pull up to the booth when directed and follow the traffic flow past the recycling area and compacting bays; the site is mostly concrete and heavy equipment, so visibility is open but noisy. Vehicles line up on busy weekends, and landscaping debris piles and roll-offs are common sights. Wear closed-toe shoes if planning to help unload, and watch for backing trucks and loaders around the tipping floor.

Before You Go

  • Secure loads with tarps or straps; loose material can blow out on the drive in the desert wind and create extra work.
  • Try to arrive early on weekends or during spring cleanup season to avoid long lines and waiting behind contractors.
  • Use a vehicle with easy access to the bed or trailer - being able to quickly lift and toss items speeds things up and keeps other drivers moving.
